Fluid Loss Control

Solids-Free and Solids-Laden Additives for Controlling Fluid Loss During and After Completion

Fluid Loss Control

Fluid Loss Control

Minimize formation damage by restricting brine invasion

Loss of completion fluids to permeable formations results in increased water saturation, scaling or emulsion generation, or fines migration, which can severely impair production. Additionally, excessive losses can compromise well control, complicate fluid management, and increase project costs. Our solids-laden and solids-free fluid loss control pills are engineered to control fluid invasion into the formation during and after all perforating and completion operations, providing unrestricted production without costly and challenging remedial treatments. For wells with openhole or cased hole completions, and for new completions or workovers or interventions, we have the technology to mitigate losses and avoid formation damage.

Solids-free viscous and crosslinked pills

Typically used in cased hole completions to reduce losses by increasing fluid viscosity or control fluid loss by creating a polymer network to seal the formation face. Removed with acid.

Solids-laden pills

Typically used while perforating in nonsand-control completions or after a sand control completion to seal inside the screen. Peels off with the onset of production or removed chemically prior to injection.

Fluid Loss Control Systems Offerings

FLO-PLEX PLUS - Fluid loss control additive

FLO-PLEX PLUS additive is a polysaccharide derivative used to control filtration in the DRILPLEX AR PLUS system. Traditional fluid-loss-control additives tend to destroy the elevated low-end rheology that makes mixed-metal oxide systems unique. FLO-PLEX PLUS additive was specifically developed to remedy this. It is particularly suited for application in the DRILPLEX AR PLUS system that uses potassium salts for increased inhibition of formation clays and shales. FLO-PLEX PLUS additive will provide fluid loss control with minimal effect on rheology up to 275 degF [135 degC].

Advantages

  • Tolerant to electrolytes
  • Positive synergy with GELPLEX agent to stabilize the rheology of the DRILPLEX AR PLUS system
  • Enhanced low-shear rheology when used with xanthan gum polymer
  • Resistant to attack from bacteria
  • Stable to 275 degF [135 degC] without thermal extension additives
  • Effective in seawater fluids if hardness is treated out before the additive is introduced

EnduraTrol - Fluid loss control additive

EnduraTrol fluid loss control additive is a nonionic natural polymer designed for use in the Endura drilling fluid system, including in high-salinity and high-hardness brines. This economical and effective filtration-control additive has some benefits when used as a standalone filtration control additive but is most optimally used in conjunction with a primary fluid loss control additive.

Advantages

  • Economical filtration control
  • Tolerance to high levels of total hardness
  • No affect on rheological properties
  • Filtration control that enhances wellbore stability

SEAL-N-PEEL - Fluid loss control pill for sand control completions

Temporarily seal the internal face of the sand screen during sand control completions

The SEAL-N-PEEL fluid loss control pill is engineered to control fluid loss inside a sand control screen during the completion process. Designed specifically as a contingency for frac-pack, gravel-pack, and stand-alone screen completions, the pill temporarily seals the internal face of the sand screen. The pill is designed with minimal solids sized specifically for the screen openings in the application. It deposits a thin, impermeable filtercake inside the screen. When the well goes on production, the filtercake simply peels away, thereby eliminating the need for remedial washes and the associated risks of screen or formation damage.

SAFE-LINK - Completion fluid loss control agent

Control losses of clear brine to the formation during completion or workover operations

SAFE-LINK completion fluid loss control agent controls brine losses to minimize formation damage and complications during completion and workover operations.  Formulated for specific densities, the SAFE-LINK agent applies an extremely viscous seal across the formation face, impeding the flow of completion fluid into the formation. After the operation, the crosslinked cellulose polymer material is easily cleaned up with diluted acid.

FLO-PLEX - Fluid loss control additive

LO-PLEX fluid-loss-control additive is a polysaccharide derivative used to control filtration in the DRILPLEX system at recommended concentrations.

FLO-PLEX additive will not destroy the low-end rheology of the DRILPLEX system as observed with conventional anionic fluid-loss-control agents. The additive is effective in seawater fluids, but all hardness should be treated out before the FLO-PLEX additive is added. It can be used in any other type of fluid where starches and cellulosic additives are permitted. The temperature stability of FLO-PLEX additive is about 250 degF [120 degC] but may be extended to 300 degF [149 degC] by the addition of a thermal stability agent. FLO-PLEX additive is resistant to bacterial degradation.

PERF-N-PEEL - Perforating operations fluid loss control system

Temporarily seal the formation against damaging fluids and solids while perforating

The PERF-N-PEEL perforating operations fluid loss control system is used to control fluids and solids invasion during conventional overbalanced perforating operations. It can be designed for delivery as an oil- or water-based fluid loss control pill. The system deposits a low-permeability filtercake that restricts deep invasion along the perforation tunnel and assists in minimizing debris in the tunnel. It also deposits a thin seal that peels off the formation when production begins.

CLEANPERF OB and CLEANPERF WB - Oil- and water-based perforating pills for fluid loss control

Temporarily control fluid losses in the perforating tunnels

CLEANPERF WB water-based perforating pill and CLEANPERF OB oil-based perforating pill are used in conjunction with the PURE perforating system, to optimize perforating operations and increase productivity. The dynamic underbalanced perforating system minimizes the volume of perforation and crushed zone debris left in the perforation tunnel. Unlike conventional fluid loss control pills, the CLEANPERF WB and CLEANPERF OB pills are formulated to lay down a low-permeability, solids-based barrier immediately after perforating. The robust, but easily removable seal is deposited on the sandface, effectively restricting deep invasion of fluids and solids along and within the perforation tunnels. With the minimal adhesive and cohesive properties of the thin filtercake, the pills readily flow back when production is initiated without requiring a remedial treatment.

SAFE-CARB - Ground marble bridging agent

SAFE-CARB ground marble bridging agent is a high-purity, acid-soluble calcium carbonate used as a bridging and weighting agent in drilling, drill-in, workover, and completion fluids. Compared with limestone, the agent features higher hardness and purity, providing better acid solubility.

This calcium carbonate bridging and weighting agent can be used in fluids ranging from conventional drilling fluids to advanced drill-in fluid systems, including

FLOPRO NT water-based reservoir drill-in fluid

  • FAZEPRO reversible invert-emulsion reservoir drill-in fluid system
  • VERSAPRO invert-emulsion reservoir drill-in fluid system
  • DIPRO high-density divalent reservoir drill-in fluid.

It can also be used with SEAL-N-PEEL fluid loss control pill to seal the inside of sand-control completion assemblies as a bridging agent and fluid-loss additive. Use OPTIBRIDGE software to select the optimal blend of SAFE-CARB agent to reduce fluid loss and minimize fluid and solids invasion.

The agent can also be added on a periodic basis for seepage control to limit losses to lost circulation and leak-off to high-permeability formations. It is particularly effective when drilling with high differential pressures caused by an overbalanced condition or when drilling depleted zones. Treatments range from 2 to 10 sacks per hour when used as a preventative measure. For depleted-zone drilling or induced-fracture applications, SAFE-CARB agent is most effective when used with

  • G-SEAL sized graphite bridging agent
  • G-SEAL PLUS wellbore stabilizing agent
  • G-SEAL PLUS COARSE carbon-based bridging agent.
